Sam Roberts-Smith graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2008 with a Bachelor of Music and Graduate Diploma in Opera. After completing his studies he took a full time position with Australia’s National opera company Opera Australia, firstly as a member of the Young Artist Program before joining the Principal Artist roster. During his time at OA, Sam performed in an impressive number of performances and gained valuable experience in productions including Macbeth, A Midsummer Nights Dream, La Boheme, Lakme, Eugene Onegin, Tosca, Manon, La Traviata, Carmen, Der Rosenkavalier, La Sonnambula, Les Pecheurs de perles ,Madama Butterfly, Fanciulla del West, Il Torvatore, Le Nozze di Figaro, The Magic Flute, Bliss, Rigoletto, and Don Giovanni.

He has performed as a guest artist at both the 80^th Birthday Gala concert for Richard Bonynge and Dame Joan Sutherland‘s 80^th Birthday Gala concert.

Sam was requested by the Prime Minister of Australia to perform the National Anthem at the Australian National Memorial for flight MH17 in Melbourne, and the first anniversary of the event at Parliament House, Canberra.

Sam has won numerous competitions and awards including the Australian Singing Competition, the Joan Sutherland Vocal Scholarship, Symphony Australia Young Vocalist Award, and winner of multiple prizes at the International Paris Opera Awards held in Paris, France.

In 2015 he returned to Perth as one of The West Australian Opera’s inaugural Mentored Artists while also joining Australia’s premier classical-crossover group the TEN Tenors. Sam is currently featured on the groups ‘Home for the Holidays’ Christmas Album. The same year he was selected as the Australian representative at the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition held in Amsterdam.

In October 2015 Sam made his China and role debut as Count Almaviva in the Australian International Opera Company’s production of Le Nozze di Figaro before returning to Australia to perform Handel’s Messiah with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Following these engagements Sam toured across North America with the TEN Tenors Christmas show.

Sam has performed extensively throughout Australia and internationally including performances in France, The Netherlands, South Korea, China, England, Scotland, and North America. Upcoming performances will see Sam make his role debut as Zurga in Les Pecheurs de perles for WA Opera, perform in North America, Australia and New Zealand.
