Hetty Kate Quartet
“When Hetty Kate takes the stage you can’t help but notice. She has a stage presence only matched by the
clarity of her voice – couple this with her dedication to music that swings and you have the jazz musician’s
singer.” – James Morrison AM
“Hetty Kate’s voice overflows with a natural musicality.” – Richard Fields, 3CR Radio
“Like Peggy Lee on a Vespa” – Marc Myers, Jazzwax USA
Hetty Kate has graced stages from New Zealand to New York and is one of Australian jazz luminary, James
Morrison’s favourite vocalists. With her most recent album for ABC Jazz/Universal Music, the critically
acclaimed Dim all the lights, Hetty divides her time between Europe and Melbourne, performing regularly
at Australia’s premier jazz festivals and clubs (such as Bennetts Lane and Sydney’s Foundry 616), as well as
major venues such as Melbourne Recital Centre and the Sydney Opera House.
Hetty’s festival credits include the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Stonnington Jazz Festival, Sapporo
Jazz Festival (Japan), New Zealand, Queenstown & Waiheke Jazz Festivals (NZ) as well as many other events
around the world. She has recorded and released 11 popular albums, and also a sought-after singer for the
flourishing lindy-hop (swing-dance) communities across Europe, Asia and Australia.
For this special performance, Hetty Kate and her Quartet will perform a smooth selection of songs from her
most recent releases. Enjoy re-imagined music from the songbooks of Peggy Lee, June Christy and Julie
London (featured in her acclaimed latest CD, Dim All The Lights), alongside popular classics that you know
and love, and curios from the swing era.
Born in Britain and raised in Melbourne, Hetty has a classic, clear sound reminiscent of the vocalists from
the 1940s and 50s, and is often compared to a young Peggy Lee or Doris Day. Known for her pure tone,
diction, faultless rhythm and swing, as well an effortless ease on stage, Hetty has fast become one of the
busiest jazz vocalists in Australia. Whilst leading three diverse ensembles of her own, she is a frequent
guest with big bands and combos locally and internationally, and always enjoys the thrill of new places and
faces at each performance. One to watch, Hetty Kate looks forward to new recordings and touring Australia
and Europe in 2016.
